This movie released with minimal expectation minus no star (if you consider Rajeev Khandelwal a star, then I am sorry!!!). It was shot in Mumbai. Mumbai which we don't know at all. I haven't even heard the director's name before I watched the movie, so I assumed that he is making his debut. I stepped into the theatre thinking that its one of those run-of-the-mill experimental cinema!!!!
Out from the theatre and I was shell shocked!!! Take a bow Mr. Gupta. What an exceptional film you have made!!! If there was any movie I liked after Taare Zameen Par, then it was your movie!!! Everything about this movie was so convincing. Right from the production, direction, editing, screenplay, music, background score and most importantly casting.
Even the topic selected is so sensitive and required efficient hands. The protagonist Aamir (Rajeev Khandelwal), a doctor by profession and a Muslim by religion, comes back from London to Mumbai. At the Airport, the customs official check his luggage more than required number of times. Irritated by the incident, Aamir reacts "mera naam agar amar hota, tab bhi aap mera checking karte????" (Would you had checked my bag, if my name was Amar?). That sets the tone of the film.
As soon as he gets out of the airport, he enters a new world, the world not known due to its dark and gloomy nature. It brings a huge turnaround of events in his life. His family does not receive him at the airport, he receives a call from a stranger who persuades him to listen and make him follow exactly what he says. Most importantly, he has to follow since his family is kidnapped by the stranger.
What happens to Aamir and his family thereafter? What is the intention of the stranger? Why has the stranger kidnapped his family? Instead of me telling you the suspense part of the movie, it is better you watch the movie and know it for yourself.
Everything about the crew of the movie is also perfect. Great work in editing department, awesome songs (although not popular!!!) by Amit Trivedi, mind blowing camera angles (better than Sarkar Raaj!!!), special mention for screenplay and dialogues which are penned by the director himself. Another factor worth mentioning about the movie is its background score!!! If the film would had failed in this department, I am sure it would had made the movie look different!!!
The breath taking scenes in the movie not only make it an edge of the seat thriller but are thought-provoking too and the entire credit goes to the captain of the ship. The scene where the protagonist is made to run behind the taxi carrying his luggage, then he is asked search for hint in shabby, ugly and dirty washroom, he is asked to collect the bag from a group of rowdies and most importantly the climax, they are all synchronised and shot to perfection. This director should continue contributing to the Indian Cinema as he has done in this film.
As far as the performances go, Rajeev Khandelwal does a really good job. In the entire movie except the 5 minutes in the end, he has to show a stunned look on his face and he does it nicely. I never saw him in his television operas but I guess he has made a mark in Bollywood. He should be careful about the roles he choose in future because he has huge expectations on his shoulder after this film. Gajraj Rao is the man in dark. His face is not shown explicitly, but his baritone makes an impact and thanks to the ringtone which is a normal tone but has a scary feel associated to it. The rest of cast also does a good job especially the lady potraying the prostitute rule.
All in all, make sure to watch this film. Don't go the theatre with a typical Masala movie fan's cap. It has something which we perhaps can't even think of considering the limited life we are living in. Go watch it!!!!
