So Apoorva Lakhia ventured into Indian Cinema on a bad note with a mediocre movie named "Mumbai se Aaaya Mera Dost". Then he stole a plot from Hollywood named "Man on Fire", mixed the superstar, Amitabh Bachchan and then created a recipe named "Ek Ajnabee". The film did an average business. Then he went on to make a realistic film named "Shootout at Lokhandwala" based on the gangsters which didn't performed well on the box office but technically was a very good movie. So someone would have had learnt from his mistakes, but Mr. Lakhia continues repeating them. His latest venture "Mission Istanbul" seemed to be a hard hitting cinema which takes on Terrorism but ends up as a badly attempted stylised action flick. Vikas Sagar (Zayed Khan), a journalist by profession, is going through tough times in his personal life after getting divorced by wife Anjali (Shriya Saran), a journalist by profession too(what a coincedence!!!). His main job is to report terrorism news (that also includes taking interviews of terrorist and perhaps fighting with them ocassionally!!! How interesting????). He gets a job with a turkish news channel 'Al-Johara' which is headed by Ghazni (Nikitan Dheer). The news channel has a ritual of honoring its 'died-on-field' journalists by putting their photos on wall naming the area "Hall of Martyrs". First Assignment - to go with Oawis Hussain(Suneil Shetty) and cover news in Afghanistan, try to interview ruthless Afghan terrorist (Shabbir Ahluwalia) and free the trapped foreigners. So he does that successfuly but loses Oawis in the encounter. Rizwan Khan (Vivek Oberoi), an ex-turkish army officer secretly tells Vikas that Oawis's murder was pre-planned and that too by the news channel. So when he peeps into the matter, he comes to know about the terrorist network framed by the Ghazni and group. But the antagonist gets behind and tries to kill him. But, he along with Rizwaan finishes off the entire army of terrorists. How amazingly realistic? I couldn't have written the story in a better way. I almost drained out!!!!
Technically, the movie fails too. I will start with story which runs good till the Vivek Oberoi enters the screen. Screenplay - the movie is fast paced in the first half but drags in the remaing portion. Music - Sorry!!! Even the Abhishek Bachchan item number doesn't work. Editing is good but the story and screenplay could not support it for long. I am sick of those rope-oriented action sequences. They are not that fun to watch.
Mr. Lakhia should takes lessons from this outing and make at least a decent movie next time because the direction in a true sense fails.
As far as the cast goes, Zayed Khan - give him some acting lessons. He tries to be so cool in such tensed situations and unnecessarily tries to be stylish. Again its so unrealistic!!! Vivek Oberoi - I thought he will do well after 'Shootout at Lokhandwala' but he declines in his role. Shriya Saran - Wasted. Shweta Bharadwaj - Not even worthy of getting wasted.Shabbir Ahluwalia - strictly okay and Niktan Dheer - He too had a good film on his shoulders 'Jodha Akbar' but he falls badly. How can I forget Anna? Suneil Shetty - Please stop acting!!!! I loved the film only because of one character i.e George Bush. This is the only character in the film which entertained me. The rest is not worthy of mentioning!!!!!
I can only say one thing in the last - Mr. Lakhia's mission has certainly flopped this time and the box office results will show it. Don't even waste your money on DVD or VCD.
