There have been a very few films in Indian cinema which are simplistic in nature. Last film which I remembered is 'Lage Raho Munnabhai' and its prequel 'Munnabhai M.B.B.S'. Then I also remembered that the dialogues penned for Munnabhai M.B.B.S. was the writer who won so many awards for his dialogue writing. I am talking about Abbas Tyrewala who has made a debut as a director of the film 'Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na'.
The second interesting fact is that the film is produced by Aamir Khan who has a great reputation with films like 'Lagaan' and 'Taare Zameen Par'. It is also produced by Mansoor Khan who has a great reputation with films like 'QSQT', 'Jo Jeeta Wohi Siqandar' and 'Josh'. The third interesting fact is that it’s the launch vehicle of Aamir Khan's nephew Imraan Khan. So with these expectations, I was sure that this movie will be very good. And fortunately, I was not disappointed!!!! This is equally a simple film targeting the youth audience.
It is one of those films which takes you back to college days and makes you remember all those things which you do in college like roaming with your friends, partying, fighting and making up with them and adding to it the 'love' factor. All these things look very amateurish but who cares - these are the best days of your life and I guess everyone will agree to it.
The story revolves around two friends - Jai (Imran) and Aditi (Genelia). They think they are the best friends but the others don't think so. Who are these others? Jai's mom (Ratna Pathak Shah), Aditi's parents (Jayant Kriplani and Anuradha Patel), their college gang (Sandhya aka Bombs, Ravindran aka Rotlu, Shaleen, Jignesh Patel aka Jiggy) and Aditi's brother Amit (Prateik Babbar). All these people think that they are perfectly made for each other and are actually going around for last five years. So these two protagonists decide to find a soul mate for each other to avoid further confusion. Jai finds Meghana (Manjari) and instantly gets attracted to her. Likewise Aditi finds her tough guy Sushant (Ayaz Khan) and gets engaged to him despite knowing that he is a loose and selfish character. But this is not the end of the story. It is full of lots of twists and turns in their lives which I guess are fun to watch on the bigger screen.
Almost all the departments of the movie-making score high in this film. Editing could have been tighter with shorter Arbaaz and Sohail track. Music is brilliant from A.R.Rahman with popular tracks like 'Pappu can't dance', 'Kabhi Kabhi Aditi' and 'Nazrein milana' and with not so popular tracks like 'Tu bole' (sung by Rahman himself) and 'Kahin to'. Lyrics and Script penned by the director himself are also catchy and has a feel good appeal.
Imran makes a great and confident debut. Look at him and you will say 'Is Jaane tu his first film?’ His dialogue delivery is perfect. Watch him in the climax scene when he beats the antagonist or when he rides on the horse. I am sure that he will get the seethis and taalis for the same. I just wish that he grows some stubble on his face in his next film :) If this is a launch vehicle for Imran, then equivalently this is a re-launch vehicle for Genelia. She has been very successful in the south with films like 'Bommarillu' and no wonder, the confidence oozes on the screen. She has a picture perfect smile and it brings freshness on the screen. She has walked into this role nicely.
The rest of cast also matches the script and screen. Manjari is a revelation. She looks sweet as well as hot -a combination that works well in Indian Cinema. Prateik Babbar (son of Raj Babbar and Smita Patil) is awesome in the film and his name should be there alongside Imran. He definitely has a future in Indian Cinema. Ratna Pathak Shah is first rate. Ayaz Khan does well too. The entire gang is perfectly cast especially the gujrati guy with his typical gujju antics. Paresh Rawal cakewalks the role but you keep guessing till the end why is he there in the film. One weak link - Sincere actors like Jayant Kriplani, Anuradha Patel, Rajat Kapoor and Kitu Gidwani are wasted although they have played their part well. Sohail and Arbaaz Khan ham. A special word for a great actor Naseeruddin Shah who has a small (in length) but significant role in the film. Watch him in the climax scene. He brings the theatre down with laughter.
Mr. Abbas Tyrewala has struck the right notes and has been successful in creating a feel- good fillm. Please keep doing the same.
All in all a good film!!! Go watch it!!!!
