Aziz Mirza is back after a long hiatus. Last I remember him was for the movie "Chalte Chalte" which was pretty much an average affair considering the previous hits like "Raju Ban Gaya Gentlemen" and "Yes Boss" and debacle like "Phir Bhi Dil Hein Hindustani". His latest venture "Kismat Konnection" minus Shahrukh Khan and Juhi Chawla (in the lead) plus Shahid Kapur and Vidya Balan was meant to be light romantic comedy, the genre in which Mr. Mirza has achieved perfection.Kismat Konnection is loosely inspired by Hollywood movie "Just My Luck" starring Lindsay Lohan which didn't hit the money grossers list. Its a simple movie about a lucky person kissing a unlucky one and thereby exchanging luck. Kismat Konnection pretty much falls in the same mode and results are almost the same. Our protagonist Raj Malhotra (Shahid Kapur), aspriring and struggling architect, with his friend Hiten (Vishal Malhotra), wants to make a big impact in the real estate world and create a successful career for himself in the very same way he was the best in his college days - best in academics, sports etc. His problem - lack of luck. Everytime he attempts - at creating a job for himself, he fails only because luck is not in his favour. He gets one opportunity to work with Sanjeev Gill (Om Puri) and even loses that. He gets so frustrated with his life that he meets Haseena Bano Jaan (Juhi Chawla), a hotline astrologer. She predicts that an unknown person (female) will bring him luck and change his life. Enters Priya (Vidya Balan) in Raj's life and suddenely his life takes a new direction. Luck is entirely in his favour. He grabs the deal with Mr.Gill but as a side effect has to lie to Priya regarding a false deal. One more side effect is that he falls in love with Priya but she is already smitten by by. As always I won't disclose the rest of the film.
Technically, the film is shot at nice and exotic locales. Brilliant Cinematography by Binod Pradhan. Screenplay and Editing could have been tighter especially the climax where the speech given by Shahid irritates. Story is very much inspired and so I won't give the whole credit to the story writer. Catchy music given by Pritam with popular tracks like 'Aai Paapi' and "Is this love". Dialogues are okay especially when we know that Sanjay Chhel is good at this form of art. Special mention for choreography by Ahmed Khan. He has utilised Shahid Kapur's potential to the fullest extent and made Vidya move to some of the beats as well.
Performances - Shahid Kapur carries on the legacy of Shahrukh Khan who gave us romatic hits like "DDLJ", "DTPH","KKHH" and the list continues. He carries off from where he left in "Jab We Met". I don't know about others but I find his performances very stereotypical. Not to mention he dances amazingly well. Vidya Balan seems to have liked the role of helping homeless aged people (Lage Raho Munnabhai). There is nothing wrong about the act, but two similar roles is not what you expect from a brilliant actress. Still she performs decently.
Juhi Chawla plays the part of Haseena Bano Jaan perfectly but is restricted to 2-3 scenes. Poor Vishal Malhotra always have to play a side kick to Shahid Kapur. He does well in his part but again repetitive. Om Puri needs to filter his roles. Himani Shivpuri makes you laugh a little bit with her accent. Boman Irani wasted. Nothing to mention about Shahrukh's background voice.
Mr.Mirza has got away this time since the movie is declared hit but needs to seriously think about a good movie next time otherwise his kismat will not connect with the audience.
Rating - 2/5
