Some movies in Indian Cinema send a straight message to the audience - If you are die hard fans of light foolish romantic comedy films, please come and watch this. Ranvir Shorey and Mallika Sherawat's new film "Ugly aur Pagli" falls into this genre. I went to watch "Ugly aur Pagli" because of three reasons- Firstly, my loved ones love this genre of film making, secondly, Mallika!Mallika!!Mallika!!! and thirdly, Ranvir's comic timing!!! Debutante Director Sachin Kamalakar Khot possibly could have picked up a better subject instead of ripping it straight from 2008 Hollywood flick "My Sassy Girl". I even thought its a continued version of "Pyaar ke Side Effects" where the lead is self expressing his life and experiences in his own way. But still the movie has its highs especially with brilliant acting from Ranvir Shorey and the chemistry between Ranvir and Mallika, which is eye-catching!!!
Kabir Achrekar (Ranvir Shorey), an engineering student for several years and is a very happy-go-lucky person and absolutely carefree. His dreams is to have a hot girlfriend. Life takes a turn. Enters Kuhu (Mallika Sherwat - obviously hot!!!) a drunkyard, who has a huge emotional backlog. Kabir starts spending time with Kuhu which he enjoys a lot, but has to take the toll of lot of slaps in return (I didn't counted the slaps to justify the number '99'). He does every possible thing to keep her happy like riding on the seat less bicycle with a wrap on skirt or wearing her high heels on pathway. One day, thanks to Kabir's misfortune, Kuhu mysteriously disappears. Kabir searches but fails. He goes into the stage of emotional breakdown. What happens next? Please watch the movie.
As mentioned earlier, the film has its own highs despite of its overall lacklustre presentation. Watch Ranvir riding on the seat less bicycle is the high point in the film and brings the theatre down with laughter. The emotional scene where Mallika and Ranvir departs is also shot well. But the lows are on higher side which makes the film look like a ordinary affair.
Sachin Khot has the potential to make good films only if he learns from the mistakes he made in this film. He should also increase the pace of the film. The second half of the film drags a lot. Likewise, the tighter screenplay and aggressive editing could have helped. Music by Annu Malik is pathetic except the track "Talli".
Performances by the leads are the only thing to watch out for - Ranvir Shorey once again pulls off a good performance. He is one of those clay actors who can be shaped into various characters and this character is no exception. Above all, his comic timing is brilliant and a very few actors have that kind of characteristic. Watch him getting slapped. He is real fun!!!! Mallika is equally competent!!! I always considered her to be a decent actress (leave aside her clothes shedding habit). She plays a complex character that is going through ups and downs and she does that well. She looks good in that dream action scene where she saves Ranvir from the bad guys!!!
One character stands out of the rest of the cast is Sushmita Mukherjee. She imitates the way Sharmila Tagore speaks and that's brilliant and utterly funny!!! Gaurav Kapoor, Payal Rohatgi and Zeenat Aman are in blink-and-miss scene. Bharati Achrekar, Vishal Malhotra are strictly okay.
The ugly and pagli show does not work despite the catchy title!!! I guess somebody should tap the chemistry between the lead and make a really good movie!!
Rating - 1.5/5
