Welcome to Mindless Entertainment Cinema!!!! (Movie Review: Singh is King)

Akshay Kumar had several hits last year which included "Namaste London", "Heyy Baby", "Bhool Bhulaiyaa" and "Welcome". This year he started badly with a mediocre movie like "Tashan". His latest venture "Singh is King" has huge expectations since the movie is made with a budget of Rs.50 crores, Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif in the lead and the film is produced by Vipul Shah who has given decent movies like "Aankhen", "Waqt" and "Namaste London". The other interesting part is the direction which is done by Anees Bazmee who has given us hit comic crappers like "No Entry" and "Welcome".

So the expectations are huge and the film doesn't disappoint to the core if one considers it as a mindless entertainment movie. There will be unbelievable Rajni type stunts, dialogues to get all the whistles and applause, the romantic angle between the leads and above all the situational comedy (at times slapstick too!!!). I guess this is typical Akshay Kumar film. Mindless as it can get.
Happy Singh (Akshay Kumar), our munda from Punjab, is someone who is known in the village for chaos situation creator. Everyone in the village is fed up with this person for the problems he create unknowingly. So the villagers plan and send him to get Lakhan aka Lucky Singh aka King(Sonu Sood), a underworld don in Austrailia, back to Punjab to bring a smile on Lucky's parents face. So he, accompanied by Rangeela (Om Puri) goes to Australia, but on the way falls in love with Sonia (Katrina Kaif) in Egypt. Phir thoda gaana vaana!!!!
Eventaully reaches Australia -He meets Lucky and ask him and his aides - brother Mika (Jaaved Jaffery), Guruji Gurbaksh Singh (Kamal Chopra), Raftaar Singh (Sudhanshu Pandey), Pankaj Udhas (Yashpal Sharma) and Dilbag Singh (Manoj Pahwa) and Lucky's assistant Julie (Neha Dhupia) to come back to Punjab. Lucky hesitates and throws Happy out of house. Happy saves Lucky in an encounter with the baddies but gets hit by them on head and eventually gets paralysed and speechless. So mistakenely, he bestows the title of King to Happy. Meanwhile Happy helps the rose lady (Kiron Kher - who had given him a helping hand when thrown out by Lucky) to create a drama of richness in front of her son-in-law Puneet (Ranvir Shorey) and ,unfortuantely for Happy, her daughter Sonia. Watch the film for the rest of the story!!!
Technically, the crew of the film makes a good effort especially with dialogues which are penned by the director himself. Cinematography is excellent. Screenplay could have been better especially toward the climax of the film. Music Director Pritam scores once again with popular tracks like "Singh is King", "Bhootni ke" and "Jee Karda" (I hope he hasn't copied this time!!!). The rap song in the end by the Snoop Dog made me leave the theatre before it ended.
The film belongs to Akshay Kumar. He performs the part perfectly but I guess he was better in his previous movies Namaste London and Bhool Bhulaiyaa. Watch him in the first half. He really brings the theatre down with laughter. Katrina Kaif continues to speak her Hindi dialogues with accent which sometimes gets annoying. But who cares? She is simply amazing presence on screen. Om Puri does well in this movie. The rapport between him and Akshay is mind blowing. Yashpal Sharma in the role of udaas and rotlu sardar makes a good effort. Jaaved Jaffery wasted to the core. But he manages to make you laugh in 1-2 scenes. Neha Dhupia doesn't have much scope. Kiron Kher makes yet another "mummy" appearance successfully. Ranvir Shorey screams most of the time but that is what is required. The rest of the cast is fine.
So folks!!! Don't expect it to be amazing movie!!! I am giving low ratings but I am sure its gonna be a huge hit. Watch it only if you are used to watching no-mind-required-only-entertainment movies!
Rating - 2/5
