Multiple Love Theory! (Movie Review: Bachna

Fresh Faces, exotic locales, great music and the biggest production house "Yashraj Films". Sounds like a good recipe for another movie which is sure shot hit even before it releases. Director Siddharth Anand brings out his third movie under Yashraj Movie with the latest and happening couple Ranbir-Deepika in the lead and to spice it up has Bipasha and Minisha in the lead. But is this enough to make a movie "HIT"? Perhaps "YES". But is it enough to make a good movie? Perhaps "NO".

Yashraj Films recently had a series of flops, the latest being Akshay-Saif-Kareena starrer "Tashan". So this time, Aditya Chopra takes the department of story writing under his supervision and the funniest part is the story resembles a lot with the evergreen actor Dev Anand starrer "Teen Deviyaan". But its still fine because its a modern take of old classic. So when we decide that we won't compare anything or person in the movie with anything or anyone, that's the point the director starts comparing things or characters in the film.

But lets start with the story - Story 1 - Sometime in 1996, Raj (Ranbir Kapoor), teenager then, along with his friends go on a Eurotrip through Eurail. In the same bogie, he founds Mahi (Minisha Lamba), a Punjabi girl, who is on the same rail trip. She is the one who thinks the story in Dilwale Dulhanniya Le Jayenge will replicate in her life too. So it starts on the same note, by Mahi missing her train and then Raj helping her to reach Zurich Airport. On the way, they sing songs, eat chocolates for free and then finally falling in love each other. After reaching Airport, Mahi comes to know Raj is fooling her. Both depart.

Story 2 - Raj shifts to Mumbai in search for a living. He gets a job with Microsoft as a gaming programmer and an offer to leave Mumbai and shift Sydney. Meanwhile, he meets Radhika (Bipasha Basu), an aspiring actor and dancer, who fortunately is his neighbour. After a couple of clashes, both of them fall in love with each other and start living under one roof. All is fine, till the Sydney offer comes Raj's way. Radhika wants to marry Raj and he is one commitment phobic. On the very marraige day, Raj flees to Sydney leaving Radhika broken into thousand pieces.

Story 3 - In Sydney, Raj has a huge team working under him. But the real life for him is the night life where he can flirt around with lot of women and enjoy his bachelorhood to the core. In the turnaround, he meets Gayatri (Deepika Padukone), a day MBA pursuant, night cabbie driver and god knows when, also a cash collector at a foodmall. He falls in love with her may be because her attitude and confidence. He goes ahead and proposes her to marry but she outrightly rejects. She does not want to marry him due to her career ambitions.

Raj realises that ditching is not a good thing to do and what he has done in past is incorrect. So he goes back to India to apologise to the two women he had ditched. Watch the rest at the theatre.

The movie could have been much better technically had the editor could have cut some portions in the second half. What could have been potentially a good movie is ruined by not so good and very emotional second half. There are some portions in the movie which are senseless especially in the second half like Deepika missing Ranbir after ditching him. Even the climax is wrapped up quickly which otherwise could have been interesting and a little bit filmy. Story Department- I have already mentioned about it. Cinematography is brilliant and that's what hooks the audience.

Music is really catchy and will suit the ears of young generation. Good job Vishal-Shekhar!!! The title song which is remixed using Kishor Kumar's voice in between is really nice to hear (To mention a fact, the rest of the song is sung by Sumeet Kumar, Kishor Kumar's grandson). Then there is a romantic track like "Ahista Ahista" which is really well sung by Lucky Ali and Shreya Ghoshal. The other peppy numbers go well with the film except for the punjabi track which is a must in a Yashraj film. But the best of the lot is "Khuda Kya" which is one of the best romantic tracks I have heard in recent times. The song is shot well and picturesque.

Its a Ranbir Kapoor movie all the way!!! Its an author backed script for him and he does really well. This talented lad will go a long way with his acting skills. Mind you, his debut movie was not rocking but he certainly was. Only thing, he looks girlish in a few scenes but he is certainly going to pull a lot of crowd to theatres. Deepika, his leading lady, does not have much to do as she is there on screen only for 7-8 scenes, but still she does well. Minisha Lamba, has done well as a young girl as well as a married woman. But the best of the female lot and to my surprise is Bipasha. She has acted well in this movie right from the romantic scenes to the emotional ones. Kunal Kapoor is one talent which suits the character of Punjabi Munda to perfection. Hiten Paintal, son of Paintal, is one talent to watch out for. I quite like the idea of bringing Ranbir and Hiten together after their fathers have been a good comic pair in the past.

The movie could have been really good had it got a good second half. But watch the movie for Ranbir Kapoor (extra half point for him) and only if you believe in Multiple Love Theory!!!!

Rating - 2.5/5
