Yeh Hein Bambai Meri Jaan!!! (Movie Review: Mumbai Meri Jaan)

Watching a bomb blast coverage on TV is far different from the people who have experienced it. The aftermath of any disaster whether natural or manual is enormous. They not only hurt you physically but they make you emotionally and mentally weak. Watching two air planes crashing the twin towers was a terrifying sight on television. It required many days for people to get the images off the mind. These events hurt religious sentiments causing riots; they make the life of cops and other people extremely difficult; the media gets a huge coverage to increase its TRP's; and the worst part is receiving hoax calls. Its a huge visible chain making the life of people as good as hell. But despite of these facts, the so called 'spirit' prevails.
Nishikant Kamat, having directed a critically acclaimed Marathi film "Dombivili Fast', has come up with a new Hindi venture titled "Mumbai Meri Jaan" which captures the post Mumbai Local Train bomb blast situation. The movie has 6 different takes on the event.

Take 1 - Tukaram Patil (Paresh Rawal), who is on the verge of retirement and is seen-it-all-but-done-nothing kind of cop.

Take 2 - Constable Sunil Kadam (Vijay Maurya), is the new kid on the block, whose honeymoon gets cancelled because of bomb blasts.

Take 3 - Suresh (Kay Kay Menon), a computer hardware trader, is an anti-muslim whose feelings for the community aggravate after the bomb blast incident.

Take 4 - Rupali Joshi (Soha Ali Khan), a reporting journalist, loses her fiance in the incident. In return, she becomes a victim of her own profession.

Take 5 - Nikhil Agarwal (R Madhavan), an international firm employee and a firm believer of clean and safe environment, who usually travels through the first class compartment of a local train, fortunately and coincidently travels through the second class compartment. His life is saved but he goes under a deep shock and is afraid of travelling in the local train.

Take 6 - Thomas (Irrfan Khan), a poor coffee peddler from Chennai, takes revenge with the high class society malls, by giving them fake bomb threats after the incident because he was insulted by the mall shopkeeper in front of his wife and daughter.

The stories are mingled subtly. The characters are unrelated except for Paresh Rawal-Vijay Maurya. There is a one/two scene(s) which has potrays important connection between Kay Kay Menon and Paresh Rawal story. There is no definite end to the movie. It is left to the audience what to take from this movie.

Kamat has an interesting way of story telling - very simple yet impactful. It definitely tickles the brains of the audience. There are so many scenes in the movie which may resemble with the real life. Dialogues were the most important part of the movie and Yogesh Joshi has done a great job. Background music also scores an upper hand. Technically, the only thing I did not liked about the movie is the framing of bomb blast incident. It looks likes lot of graphics are being used. This portion could have been avoided.

This movie is all about performances. The best of the lot is Paresh Rawal. He is the one who lightens the movie with his sense of humour. Kay Kay Menon and Irrfan Khan are the best actors in the country as of now. They have put up a tremendous performance. Watch Irrfan Khan when he takes revenge against the mall shopkeeper!!! This man has got least of dialogues but is so much expressive. Soha Ali Khan, who had given a good performance in "Rang De Basanti" does her part well too. Her story should have had ended in the first half itself. Two actors to watch out for are R. Madhavan and Vijay Maurya. Both are competent. Madhavan expresses fear in the best way.

The Mumbai spirit is critically appreciated in this movie. The Dev Anand classic "Yeh hai Bambai meri jaan" runs as background music in the climax which is very apt and suitable. The movie will have a multiplex audience but will fail to appeal the masses and I guess even the Mumbai masses because "yeh hai mumbai meri jaan"!!!!!

Rating - 3.5/5
