Colourful Politics!!!! (Movie Review: Gulaal)

Movie: Gulaal
Dir: Anurag Kashyap
Cast: Kay Kay Menon, Aditya Srivastava, Abhimanyu Singh, Deepak Dobriyal, Mahie Gill and Ayesha Mohan

Preview - Anurag Kashyap's previous movies have been different till now. With a wide range of movies like 'DevD', 'Black Friday', 'No Smoking' and even the animated film 'Return of Hanumaan', he has given the viewers a chance to think and enjoy. 'No Smoking' was the only exception to this. But the other movies are fantastic. Reputation always carry the baggage of expectations and the expectations are huge from his latest political movie "Gulaal". With a talented star cast (especially Kay Kay Menon), the expectations were doubled.

About the movie - The story of the movie revolves around Dukey Bana (Kay Kay Menon) who is revolutionizing the Rajputana movement with an intention of having a seperate Rajputana state. One of the ways of doing it is to have the youth supporting him outrightly. Dileep (Raj Singh Choudhary), to pursue his Law Studies comes to Jaipur. On the very first day of his college, he gets ragged by Jadwal (Pankaj Jha), college student's head. He finds a friend in Rananjay Singh Ransa (Abhimanyu Singh) and the other ragging victim Anuja (Jesse Randhwa). Due to Ransa's aggressive and fearless behaviour, Dukey Bana influences Ransa to contest the college elections on the behalf of 'Rajputana' community against Kiran (Ayesha Mohan). Karan (Aditya Srivastava), Kiran's brother kills Ransa. Dukey Bana immediately picks Dileep, who is a subdued character, as the election candidate. Dileep wins the elections and befriends Kiran. Dileep eventually falls in love with Kiran but is unaware of the consequences. Please watch the rest of the movie on the screen.

Strength -
  • Mindblowing performances from the entire cast. Kay Kay Menon is super fabulous and gives an award wining performance.
  • The entire movie is fast paced and there is no single moment of boredom.
  • The best part of the movie is the gripping climax.
Weaknesses -
  • The language used in the film is abusive but that's expected out of realistic film.
  • The folk music is good but may not appeal the masses.
Overall verdict -
General Elections are scheduled in the month of Apr-May and this movie is a must watch for all the potential voters since they will definitely learn one one thing in this movie i.e. colourful politics!!!

Rating - 4/5
